Gate Notification-2009

Yes, your much awaited GATE-2009 notification has come out today! Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has been designated as the Organizing Institute for GATE 2009.The overall coordination and responsibility of conducting GATE 2009 would lie with IIT Roorkee.

The important dates as per GATE-2009 notifications are as below:

Commencement of GATE-2009 forms:
1) Sale of information brochure and offline GATE application forms: 22nd Sept., 2008 (Mon).
2) Online application form submission: 22nd Sept., 2008 (Mon).

Last date of issue of GATE-2009 forms:
(1) By post from GATE Offices: 17th October 2008 Friday
(2) At bank counters: 24th October 2008 (Friday)
(3) At GATE office counters: 29th October 2008 (Wednesday)

Last date for submission of GATE-2009 forms:
1) Online application form submission (website closure): 24th October 2008 (Friday)
2) Receipt of completed offline application form at respective zonal GATE Office: 29th October 2008 (Wednesday)

Date of GATE-2009 exam: 08th February 2009 (Sunday)
Announcement of GATE-2009 results: 15th March 2009 (Sunday)

What is new in GATE 2009?
You must be wondering how much GATE-2009 is different from previous years. Well there are quite a few:

1. From GATE 2009, the validity of GATE score will be ONE YEAR only.

2. Papers merged from GATE 2009 onwards:
With effect from GATE 2009, Information Technology (IT) paper is merged into Computer Science (CS) paper. There is no separate IT Paper for GATE 2009. The name and code of the merged paper will be Computer Science and Information Technology (CS).

3. Papers discontinued from GATE 2009 onwards
Computational Science and Electrical Sciences sections have been discontinued in XE paper with effect from GATE 2009.

Change in Structure of GATE Papers:
Following changes in GATE structure is universal to all papers:

In GATE 2009 examination, papers will be of 3 hours duration and will contain 60 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. The question paper will consist of only multiple choice objective questions. Each question will have four choices for the answer. Only one choice will be correct. Candidates have to mark the correct choice on an Optical Response Sheet (ORS) by darkening the appropriate bubble against each question.

There will be 1/3rd negative marking for wrong answers

Change specific to the Structure of Geology and Geophysics (GG) paper in GATE 2009:
The GG paper will consist of two parts: Part A and Part B with total of 60 questions carrying 100 marks.

Part A will be common to both Geology and Geophysics candidates. It will consist of 20 questions, each of 1 mark.

Part B will contain two sections: Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geophysics).
Geology candidates will attempt questions in Section 1 only.
Geophysics candidates will attempt questions in Section 2 only.
Each of the sections (Section 1 & Section 2) in Part B will consist of 40 questions; all will be 2-mark question.

GATE 2009 new Examination centres:
Bagalkot in Karnakata state.
Alwar, Sikar and Bikaneer in Rajasthan state.
Rajkot in Gujarat state.
